Workshop Review | Bui Brothers Lighting | Pittsburgh, PA

When Leeann Marie told me that the Bui Brothers were coming to Pittsburgh to teach an off-camera lighting workshop, I think it took me less than 10 seconds to get registered!  I have so much to learn. That’s the beauty of this industry, there’s ALWAYS so much to learn! I’ve always been more of a “natural lighting” photographer…but as Vu Bui commented yesterday, that’s just what people say when they don’t know how to use any other light! That’s so true! I really never liked the look that a flash produced in photos, but that’s just because I was never taught by such cool experts how to do it properly! I came away from yesterday’s workshop with far, FAR more knowledge than what I showed up with. I’m super psyched to bring some of these techniques to good old Erie, PA.

If you are living under a rock (ok, I’m a little dramatic) and don’t know who the Bui Brothers are…check out their website. The Bui Brothers {Lan & Vu} are a dynamic team who are photography and cinemetography extraordinaires.  They were certainly comedians…which helps an 8 hour workshop go by fast.  I could have spent an entire week with them to try and absorb even a fraction of their expertise. It impressed me that even “big time” pros in LA are cost-conscious!  They showed us the cheapest possible way to create certain lighting effects…and at one point Vu even held up a grid that he made entirely out of Panera straws. Ahh the creative genius.

Here’s a few shots of the brothers in action!

And a few of my favorite indoor shots::

And on to outdoor!!!

Another favorite!

And THE shot! Lan, myself, 1 other photog, and this trooper of a model were the only ones remaining outside at this point because of the rain! I’m glad we hung in there to get this shot! So cool!

A HUGE thank you to the Bui Brothers for sharing their wealth of knowledge, and to Leeann Marie of Leeann Marie Photography for organizing the workshop and making it all happen!  It was awesome to meet some Pittsburgh area photographers, and I’m so glad I was able to be a part of this. Overall, I give the workshop a 10! I’d gladly pay to learn from these guys again and again!
